This hands-on workshop was first designed when the IS Code for Concrete Mix Proportioning IS:10262 underwent a major revision including all the durability factors of IS-456 2000, incorporating many materials like chemical admixtures, mineral admixtures, Blended cements etc., basically for the field professional engineers very quickly on demand from the academic institutions it was revised to accommodate the university syllabus driven requirements thus it became a workshop where practicing professionals and the students could attend together and get the career opportunities. The Second Revision to this program was incorporated when the IS Code for aggregates IS: 383 were revised in 2016 to accommodate the knowledge on the different types of aggregates and their importance in Concrete Mix Proportioning.  The Third Revision happened when the IS 10262 was revised again in 2019 this was one of the radical changes which had essence of the old new and future. Some performance based concrete provisions were also part of revisions this has brought new dimensions to know about concrete proportioning. This two days workshops will gives hands on experience on mix design practices using IS 10262.

We at Don Bosco Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, organized a Two days’ workshop on concrete mix design using IS 10262:2019 theory & practice by an eminent speaker Er.Nagesh Puttaswamy, Independent Civil Engineering Professional. The programme is started around 10.00 am by welcoming the audience by Master of Ceremony by Prof. Raghavendra R and Dr.R.L.Ramesh Professor & HOD Department of Civil Engineering welcomed the Dignitaries to the stage by offering flower Bouquet. Ms. Vandana D raj of Seventh semester rendered the invocation song the invocation song followed by the welcome Address done by Prof. Sandhyarani G M. The resource person was introduced by Prof Vindyarani.M.P and the dignitaries on the Dias along with the selected participants lightened the lamp. Dr.R.L.Ramesh, Professor & HOD Department of Civil Engineering briefed about the department strength, facilities and also shared the department was accredited by NBA for three years. He also briefed about the importance of workshop and about the resource person. Er. Nagesh Puttasamy addressed the students about the schedule of the workshop and how he will take these two days to learn the mix design process.  Presidential Remarks was given by Principal Dr. Nagabhushana B S, he congratulated the department for conducting the technical events in an effective way. Followed by the remarks of principal Mr.Gobinath S proposed the vote of thanks and after the short break the sessions were taken by Er. Nagesh Puttasamy.

The co-ordinator of the event Prof. Raghavendra D briefed the participants about the learning outcomes of this workshop and he shared his personal experience of the workshop attended by the same resource person. The session -1 was started around 11.00 and it was till 1.45 P.M. The resource person has given the brief knowledge about concrete the code books, material selection process admixtures etc., Followed by the lunch break from  1.45 to 2.30 the session -2 has been started and he was discussing about the process of mix design and prerequisites for the mix design with higher level of interaction with students followed by a break.

The conclusion remarks of the day was done by co-ordinator of the event Prof. Raghavendra D

Day -2 the session has been started around 9.30 A.M. Er. Nagesh Puttasamy  enriched participants by creating the awareness about the various types of code books and the code book for the mix design. Followed by the break from 11.15 to 11.30 the session -3 all the participants were doing the manual calculation of mix design followed by the instructions of the resource person. Followed by the lunch break from 1.15 to 2.15 P.M  the resource person performed the mix design in concrete laboratory section of material, mixing of material and he has performed the basic concrete test like flow test, slump cone test with and without admixtures. The participants got a Wide spectrum of Knowledge of knowledge and exposure by noticing the mix process. Finally the participant’s certificates were distributed institution wise and the oral feedback was shared by the participants. The participants appreciated the knowledge levels of the resource person, and appreciated the hospitality. Er. Nagesh Puttasamy was honoured by all the faculty members of civil department and HOD. The event co-ordinator Prof. Raghavendra D Thanked all the participants, faculty for the success of the workshop. The event came to end by national anthem followed by small refreshments.

Objectives

The objective of this program is to make the participants understand the facts about concrete beyond strength

  • How properties of concrete shall be decided for specific jobs properties other than strength.
  • How to interpret codal provisions of IS 456 – 2000 & IS 10262 – 2019 how correlate and take up critical conditions for design.
  • How can we interpret codal provisions and clauses in optimizing the mix for economy or to ensure durability also to efficiently use the properties of certain materials.
  • Logics of concrete mix proportioning for various conditions.
  • Basic Steps under proportioning as governed by different codes

Learning outcomes

  • The programme allows gaining knowledge on material selection properties of Fine aggregate, Coarse aggregate and cement.
  • The participants will get hands-on practice in mix design calculations using the code books.
  • It will provide a pathway to the participants to do mix design by their own for any grades of concrete.
